Our complex operations require the best of the best. Our workforce is equipped with technical skills and capabilities that take decades to build. Building a talented global workforce starts with an ongoing commitment to recruit exceptional talent from diverse backgrounds.

In view of our global scale, we reach into markets across the world to bring in the best people, representative of the communities in which we operate. We have been consistently rated a top engineering employer among industry peers with enduring recruiting and internship programs for both professional and manufacturing disciplines.

We have hiring programs in most countries where we operate. These include local internship programs, many of which have been in place for years and are an important early investment in talent and talent identification. Graduates of these programs become integral to our team. For example, in Papua New Guinea, our training program has been running for more than a decade, with graduates of this program becoming members of our local operations leadership.

Our internships provide hands-on, unique opportunities for students around the world. During their time with us, they practice applying classroom skills and concepts in the workplace, gain valuable exposure to their chosen field of study, and obtain practical work experience while expanding their professional network.

ExxonMobil “Top of Industry” for most attractive U.S. employer for 12th consecutive year and #1 energy company in countries with large ExxonMobil footprint

ExxonMobil has been consistently recognized as an industry-best company by Universum2, an organization that surveys over 50,000 U.S. college students who are actively engaged in engineering, business, science, and IT disciplines.

This recognition continues to demonstrate the success of our university recruiting model. The talent we hire and develop is challenged with creating sustainable solutions that improve quality of life and meet society’s evolving needs.

This achievement is a reflection of the partnerships we have across U.S. college campuses, ExxonMobil’s strong brand and employee value proposition, and the work of ExxonMobil employees, who dedicate their time to engage with students as they consider future careers.”

Investing in globally diverse local talent

The global breadth of our operations makes diversity foundational to what we do. With active hiring in 34 countries, we continuously build a workforce reflective of the communities in which we operate. It starts with attracting the right talent. We strive to hire people who share our values, fit our culture, can contribute immediately, and desire a long, successful career at ExxonMobil.

In 2024, hiring programs supported our ability to successfully attract campus and experienced talent into roles across the Company. We leverage our hiring programs to supplement internal development as we consider growth areas and skill needs.

We recruit qualified talent from a broad range of sources available in the communities in which we operate, building a diverse and healthy talent pipeline. We monitor our hiring programs and continually assess effectiveness of our recruiting efforts, including understanding the availability of qualified talent through multiple lenses. Our approach to global recruiting fosters a broad range of backgrounds in our workforce.

Examples from around the world:

  • In the U.S., we utilize labor market information to understand the pool of talent available4. In 2024, 40% of our professional hires1 were minorities and 30% were women, both in line with availability in the market for the degrees in which we hire.
  • In Guyana, we are growing our national workforce through strategic investments in local education. In the past 3 years, we’ve recruited over 100 Guyanese nationals to join our workforce.
  • In China, our internships provide expanded opportunities for the local community near our China 1 project.

Sponsoring future generations of industry leadership

Long-term success in growing a diverse workforce in our industry requires investment in expanding the pool of STEM students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, also known as STEM. Since 2000, ExxonMobil and the ExxonMobil Foundation have invested $1.6 billion in education globally, with a focus in supporting programs that grow the STEM talent pipeline and create greater economic opportunity preparing students for careers. As part of this investment, we support programs that help broaden access to education and inspire students to pursue careers with us and in the broader oil and gas industry.

In the fall of 2024, the ExxonMobil Foundation launched two pilot Teen Engineering and Tech Centers in Spring and Houston, Texas, serving hundreds of promising young students across the state’s largest and most diverse metro area. The centers provide innovative after-school programs that engage high school students in STEM education and STEM careers at no cost to students or their families. The facilities feature state-of-the-art makerspaces, 3D printing, virtual reality, and drive connection to tangible STEM career paths. Wraparound services are also provided (e.g., transportation, academic support, college counseling, meals) to remove barriers and support retention.

By providing opportunities for students to explore hands-on STEM applications, increase their capabilities, and build long-term career interest, we look to empower underserved high school students to harness STEM education as a launchpad for success and economic opportunity – all while strengthening the industry’s talent pipeline. These centers are developed in collaboration with local, high-need high schools.

Upon proof of concept, our goal is to expand in other U.S. locations and internationally where needs exist.

A global talent pipeline

Operating in 56 countries, we look to engage with local communities where we operate to provide education and hands-on work experience. This provides access to diverse local talent pools and builds the local talent pipeline that is instrumental in running our operations.

We engage with local stakeholders and educational institutions to provide opportunities and build stronger capabilities, enriching the communities in which we operate and supporting the success of ExxonMobil.

Training and hiring locally has the shared benefit of helping us meet our workforce needs while advancing local economic development and education. We aim to enhance the long-term capability of local communities by leveraging the capability of our organization and engage in training and educational partnerships locally.

Partnership with local communities and educational institutions

In the countries where we operate, the training and education partnerships we participate in continue to yield tangible results in growing diverse talent, benefiting our industry and our Company.

Guyana

ExxonMobil along with the Government of Guyana and other industry partners are investing in the Oil and Gas Training Center, part of the wider Guyana Technical Training College Inc. (GTTCI). ExxonMobil leads GTTCI’s Energy and Technology programs with a focus on Oil and Gas disciplines: mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and controls, and process operations. In 2024, the first class of 24 trainee technicians completed training at the FacTor (Facility Simulator), a fully functioning process plant that provides practical training, enabling trainees to experience operations, troubleshooting, and maintenance in a safe environment.

ExxonMobil has led collaboration among industry, contractor firms and Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) to assist North Baton Rouge residents in acquiring the skills needed to compete for industrial jobs. The North Baton Rouge Industrial Training Initiative (NBRITI) provides no-cost training in electrical, instrumentation, millwright, pipefitting, process technology and welding. A key objective of NBRITI is to confirm employment for all graduates successfully completing the program. Approximately 90% of graduates are employed in our industry. To date over 650 individuals have completed the NBRITI program.
