Papua New Guinea clans unite to conserve 20,000 hectares

  • We support the well-being of the communities and pursue environmental excellence where we operate.
  • This milestone achievement advances our affiliate ExxonMobil Papua New Guinea’s long-term biodiversity strategy.
  • Protect Tomorrow. Today is the principle that guides us,” says ExxonMobil PNG Biodiversity Supervisor Anita Mosby.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is a country of unique biodiversity with a large proportion of its fauna and flora found nowhere else on Earth. Caring for these environments that local communities rely on for their everyday needs and where they may have spiritual connections is important for our operations in the country.

That's why, in 2023, we participated in a conservation deed signing in the Lower Kikori. This event marked a record-breaking milestone toward shared long-term conservation goals in the region.

By the numbers

  • 11 deeds signed

for community conservation, which is the largest number of conservation deeds ever signed at one time in PNG.
  • ~1,000 people

representing 109 clans across two local-level government areas in the Lower Kikori region who witnessed the signing of the deeds.
  • >20,000 hectares

of land in the Lower Kikori region have been committed by local landowners for conservation.

These deeds serve to create formal protected areas in the Kikori Delta area. We have supported this effort for more than a decade through collaboration, engagement and facilitation.

Our long-term goal is to retain biodiversity value in the area in the following ways, as outlined in PNG’s strategy:

    • Maintain the integrity of the ecosystem in the project’s upstream area.
    • Conserve priority ecosystems such as the Hides Ridge and Lake Kutubu areas.
    • Protect focal habitats and significant ecological features such as caves and swamp forests.
    • Identify and offset impacts such as land cover changes from the installation of pipelines and roads.

We are proud to have a strong record in PNG of providing support to local communities across a wide range of environmental projects. These projects continue to transform the lives of Papua New Guineans.
