Volunteering: How we help in Asia Pacific
- From conservation to community support, our volunteers help across society.
- Our staff take part in programs tailored to make a positive impact on the local community.
- We’re also focused on educating the next generation, helping students.
Ever wondered where and how do we help communities across Asia Pacific? Inspired by International Volunteer Day, we shine a light on the work our teams throughout the region play, helping to make a better today and tomorrow.
India
ExxonMobil employees in India are helping to ignite scientific curiosity among children.
The company sponsors the Agastya Foundation’s innovative program to provide hands-on scientific learning to students from public schools on the outskirts of Bengaluru.
Fitted with a wide range of lab equipment and reusable science models, a ‘mobile science lab’, sponsored by ExxonMobil, visits schools and conducts science experiments with children from classes 6 to 10 (aged 11-15). This initiative will benefit 16,000 children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
From making science models to discussing nuclear submarines and satellites, our volunteers are helping ensure that the next generation of India’s scientific thinkers are not short of ideas and inspiration.
Indonesia
ExxonMobil volunteers in Indonesia are taking action to protect Java's coastline. They've planted 35,000 mangrove trees this year alone, adding to the 105,000 planted since 2012. Volunteers also work side by side with local fishing communities to cultivate mangrove seedlings as part of ongoing restoration efforts.
The economic development of these communities has also been in focus. We are helping local fishermen make products from their catch, creating new sources of income. This initiative has already helped more than 450 small businesses in the areas where ExxonMobil operates.
Malaysia
Employees in Malaysia support a number educational and environmental causes. They run a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) program for high school students in the Klang Valley and in Terengganu state support students’ future careers. Through fun, hands-on experiments and employees sharing career experiences, students also gain insights into life in the energy industry.
This year, our volunteers are also supporting the regeneration of a forest in the heart of Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur. Partnering with a local conservation group, they helped replant rainforest saplings at the Bukit Kiara Federal Park to protect its biodiversity. The park, one of Kuala Lumpur’s significant remaining ‘green lungs’, is also home to unique wildlife and several endangered species.
Thailand
ExxonMobil Thailand contributes to the communities where we operate. Our teams work to help improve safety, health, education, the environment and livelihoods.
Earlier this year our employees volunteered at a local school in the Nakhon Sawan province, painting the football ground and planting trees as part of the ‘ExxonMobil Brings Smiles to the Students’ program. Our Thai volunteers have also donated blood to save lives for over 35 years – Give Blood, Give Lives, Give Forever.
Singapore
Since 1999, ExxonMobil Singapore has supported the Singapore Red Cross through mobile blood donation drives, collecting over 15,000 bags of blood.
And, for the 14th year running, our volunteers ‘adopted’ rental blocks in Singapore, assembling bags of household essentials for 1,100 homes. Over the years, we have stepped up our giving to help residents with alleviating some of their grocery expenses.
Volunteers also help to inspire the next generation, working with Junior Achievement Singapore to share with students their STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) perspectives and career experiences.
They share insights, and host activities like interactive quizzes, and other hands-on group activities – allowing students to apply their science knowledge to ‘real life’ scenarios.
These are some of the activities in Singapore, where we aim to be a good corporate citizen by working with our stakeholders and local organizations to make a positive impact in the community we operate in.
Australia
Conservation was the focus for Esso Australia’s Long Island Point Plant. Our teams here participated in the Willum Warrain Aboriginal Association Tree Planting Day, along with members from Western Port Biosphere, Mornington Peninsula Shire and Willum Warrain. We have partnered with these groups since 2021.
This year saw the planting of numerous indigenous plants as part of the Healing Water Country Project. The initiative is helping to create a biolink along the water course between Willum Warrain’s pun pun (wetlands) and the Warrangine Creek, helping to restore the environment and increase biodiversity.
