Direct air capture
Removing carbon dioxide from the air around us
Removing CO2 directly from the air? Yes we are!
You heard that right. We’re working on a technology that removes carbon dioxide from the air around us.
We agree that no technology can take care of all emissions, so a combination of tools will be needed to reach net-zero. Direct air capture (DAC) is likely to play an important role, and because it removes CO2 directly from the air, it could be installed almost anywhere!
The challenge
It’s definitely not easy. The concentration of CO2 in the air is super low, making DAC pretty complex. And it’s not cheap either! The cost needs to be lowered before it can be scaled commercially. The solution
We're on it! Our team is running a pilot project at our facility in Baytown, Texas, where we’re testing our own unique design with the goal to, over time, create a scalable and economically viable solution.
Meet our experts
We can’t rely on a single technology to do it all. That’s why at ExxonMobil we’re working to advance a range of technologies that will be available at scale in the short, medium and long term.

How does it work?
By moving large amounts of air through a sophisticated filter that separates the CO2 , which will then be stored deep underground, permanently and safely. Decarbonized air comes out on the other side, also providing a carbon credit that can be used to offset other emissions, either ours or others.
