Doing our part for the energy transition
We have been implementing initiatives in our Singapore operations to reduce our emissions, and are working on solutions to help others reduce theirs.
Energy efficiency
Technologies allow us to reduce, reuse and recycle energy throughout our operations.
That’s where cogeneration comes in. This technology helps improve energy efficiency. At the Singapore Complex, we have three cogeneration facilities that can generate around 440 megawatts of electricity and steam for our operations.
Using ExxonMobil’s Global Energy Management System (GEMS), our teams have implemented other projects to improve energy efficiency. Some of these have clinched national accolades, including the National Environment Agency’s Energy Efficiency National Partnership awards.
Research and development (R&D)
In support of Singapore’s and society’s 2050 net-zero ambitions, we have been conducting research on new materials and technologies. Some of our research focus areas include ways to improve carbon capture and enable the recycling of composite materials.
We have also conducted multiple energy system modeling studies to better understand the potential pathways to achieve the net-zero ambitions for the Southeast Asian region. This includes the life cycle assessments and techno-economic analyses of hydrogen pathways as an emissions-reduction solution.
Since 2018, we have provided over US$10 million in funding to advance research in next-generation technologies, seeding more than 30 research projects and programs in Singapore.
Going forward, in addition to collaborations with researchers from NTU, NUS and A*STAR via the Singapore Energy Consortium, we are evaluating potential research areas in the form of a corporate lab framework. These opportunities are aligned with Singapore’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2025 strategy.
Lower-emission fuels (LEF)
Demand for lower-emission fuels is expected to grow rapidly, driven by the aviation, marine and heavy-trucking industries. By leveraging current technology and our facilities in Singapore, we have been providing engine-ready solutions to help our customers.
Renewable diesel: Since 2023, Esso Renewable Diesel R20 is available at selected Esso service stations. It can be used by our commercial customers with diesel fleets and motorists with diesel engines.
Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF): We delivered the first cargo of certified SAF to Singapore Changi Airport as part of a one-year pilot project in July 2022. The fuel, blended at our facilities in Singapore, powered Singapore Airlines and Scoot flights from Changi. We also supplied blended SAF to other airlines, such as Cathay Pacific and Fiji Airways at Changi Airport.
Marine: Since 2022, ExxonMobil has been supplying bio-marine fuels in Singapore.
Low Carbon Solutions
ExxonMobil established its Low Carbon Solutions (LCS) Asia Pacific business in Singapore in 2021, working to accelerate a lower-emission future.
The LCS team is working on studying and developing carbon capture and storage hubs and hydrogen value chains in the region. These will help hard-to-abate sectors like cement, energy and chemicals, and steel, to reduce their emissions.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS): We believe a network of regional CCS hubs could help industry across Asia meet its decarbonization goals.
In March 2024, the Singapore government announced that it had selected the S-Hub consortium, comprising ExxonMobil and Shell, to evaluate and develop a cross-border CCS project for reducing carbon dioxide emissions in Singapore.
