Guyana is unique in that four of the seven species of marine turtles in the world — the Leatherback, Green, Hawksbill, and Olive Ridley turtles — nest on the shores of Shell Beach.
World Sea Turtle Day is celebrated on June 16th each year.
“Arya Takes a Swim,” named after Guyana’s first lady, Arya Ali, is a children’s book that aims to teach the younger generation about marine life conservation. The book is inspired by our turtle telemetry program, where we have tagged and tracked turtle movement along the coast since 2018.
We partnered with Environmental Management Consultants Guyana (EMC) to bring this story to life. On World Turtle Day, we celebrated by distributing over 12,000 copies of the book to 500 primary schools across Guyana. Alistair Routledge, Lead Country Manager of Guyana, shared Arya’s journey with a class of excited students.
Our efforts in turtle conservation are part of ExxonMobil’s broader commitment to caring for land and biodiversity. We strive to protect and preserve the natural habitats in which we operate, ensuring sustainable practices that benefit both wildlife and local communities.
